OTDR Module
The Fiber U OTDR module converts any Windows PC to a full function OTDR. The OTDR consists of an optical module for either 850/1300 multimode or 1310/1550 singlemode testing, a mainframe that controls the optical module and processes the optical signals and a user-supplied PC that processes and displays the traces. The module can be operated off an AC adapter/recharger or a built-in battery.
The OTDR module connects to the PC with a RS232 cable and the Windows 95/98 software supplied gives the PC full control of the module, provides for trace analysis and data storage. This is perhaps the easiest OTDR to use, since the operation is based on normal Windows operations. Functions are chosen by pointing with a mouse, buttons on the screen or "hot keys," traces are displayed in windows, and file management is Windows standard.
The OTDR screen contains complete data on the trace in toolbars and windows to let the user know at a glance what parameters were used in the testing and what is currently being measured. The software allows viewing or comparing up to 8 traces simultaneously, managing an unlimited number of stored traces, and analyzing the traces with equal power to any OTDR available today. An autotest function will identify relevant events and display the data on the trace.
For the instructor teaching fiber optics, this OTDR can be used with a large monitor or projector to allow the entire class to see the OTDR at work. The OTDR software can be used on any computer without the OTDR itself for analyzing data or teaching from stored traces. And the software license allows copying to multiple PCs in a lab, which allows all students to analyze the same traces as part of the class.

OTDR Kits
The Fiber U OTDR Kit is a complete, ready-to-use package for the fiber optic installer, technician or instructor. It includes a OTDR, proper launch cable (sometimes called a pulse-suppressor cable), trace storage and analysis software, self-study training program and hard carrying case.
Self-Study Training Included
We've had several experiences with installers buying OTDRs and making big mistakes in using them. They are not simple instruments like a fiber optic power meter and source. The user must know how to interpret the display on the instrument in order to use it's capability. So we've developed a self-study training program and bundled it with our OTDRs, and we can provide training or tech support to make sure our customers are successful in their installations!

Attenuation:
Resolution: resolution of measured attenuation indicating at the PC screen ?0.001 dB.
Accuracy: Absolute error for attenuation measurement is no more then 0.02 dB/km.
Averaging:
The OTDR allows setting the number of tests averaged to 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256. It may also be set to "free run" and give a real-time display.

Fiber Optic Connector Interface:
Multimode optical fibers are connected to the OTDR with ST - type connectors and singlemode optical fiber with the FC-type connector. Adapting to other connectors should be done with patch cables, hybrid mating adapters or the launch cable.

PC Interface:
The OTDR operating, mapping and storing of data is done by a standard PC using Windows 95/98. Connection to the PC is by RS-232 ports using the cable provided.
